Michelle Littler has been creating cards ever since she was a little girl. “When I first moved in with my grandmother, she tried to find a project that we could do together. She always loved creating cards so we would sit together and create cards for the entire family. But it didn’t just stop there. I would also create stationery, bookmarks and anything else that could be sent through the mail. I was hooked.” Michelle attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh where she studied Graphic Design with a concentration in Illustration. After graduation, she considered joining a corporate card company but felt that the work was impersonal and overly mass produced. Instead, she became a Graphic Design Instructor where she constantly doodled during meetings and on in-office memos. Co-workers started to notice her work and soon began asking if she could create cards for them. Armed with her sketchbook and an iced latte’, littletoad was born. “I think it was always in the back of my mind, creating my own line of cards but it just took a little push to get me going” I’m also so lucky I have a support system not only at home but a work. It’s a great feeling when you know people are pulling for you and watching you live your dream”
About littletoad
Why the name littletoad? littletoad is what my boyfriend called me one day when he caught me splashing in puddles trying to get inspiration.
Why is littletoad unique? The personal touch is what makes my products so unique. Sending a card should be a personal experience and the card should reflect that person’s personality. That’s why I love custom orders. I love talking to people and finding out how we can alter my illustrations to make the perfect card for that special person. I also love the idea of creating custom illustrations to make them even more special. There is nothing better than seeing a person’s face when they open a card and they can tell it was picked out just for them and not off a rack. The other quality that makes us unique is that I believe that personal touches should be affordable. Everyone deserves to have the ability to personalize cards and not have to break into their piggy bank to do it.
What do I hope people get out of my greetings? When I create an illustration I rarely think about where it’s going to end up. I try and make my illustrations and characters have stories of their own. You can look at them and get an instant sense of their personality and suddenly it becomes more than a drawing on paper. They suddenly come to life. I personally have stories developed for each one of my characters, but I also like the idea that people have their own idea of who the character is and make up their own. If that happens I’ve done my job as an illustrator.
What is your business philosophy? My philosophy is to make greetings that will bring a smile to people’s faces. It’s as simple as that. It truly is a privilege when people bring your illustrations into their home. I love what I do and hopefully it shows. If I ever forget why I do what I do, I grab a pencil and start to doodle and it all comes back.
